Olga Stelmakh, Cai & Lenard’s off-councel, took part in the Diplomatic conference for the adoption of the UNIDROIT draft Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters Specific to Space Assets.
The conference was held from 27 February to 9 March 2012 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany in Berlin. The Protocol was adopted by the representatives of 40 states, international organizations and private sector and became a logical conclusion of the decennial negotiation process conducted under the aegis of the UNIDROIT.
In spite of the Protocol’s thematic scope, it is of interest to business and focuses on the space industry, insurance and banking sector. It is expected that the Protocol may be applied practically in those spheres of space activity where the attraction of private investing is much-needed. In opinion of Olga Stelmakh, the document may be of service to Ukraine, in particular, for the development of space applications and for more active participation of Ukraine in the international space projects and programs.
